Rank Brand Known for Price range in our edit Best for
1 Diptyque Paris house with the widest range of classic scents £58 to £290 Gifts and first-time luxury buyers
2 Trudon French heritage and gold-crested candles £95 to £500 Statement scents and special occasions
3 Le Labo Smoky, minimalist Santal 26 £68 A modern, understated scent

1. Diptyque: best all-rounder

Diptyque has been making candles since 1963, and it has the widest range of the four, from vanilla and amber to rose, fig and tuberose. The brand says its classic-size candle burns for about 50 hours. With seven scents in our edit and prices from £58, there's a Diptyque for almost every budget.

2. Trudon: best for heritage

Cire Trudon is often described as France's oldest candlemaker. Its candles are hand-poured in France and finished with a gold crest. Our edit runs from the £95 Ernesto to a 2.8kg Abd El Kader statement candle at £500, and the 800g Abd El Kader offers up to 60 hours of burn time.

3. Le Labo: best for modern minimalism

Santal 26 is a smoky blend of sandalwood, leathery musk and spicy cedarwood. At £68 it's good value for the category. It's the only Le Labo candle we stock, which is why it ranks third on range, not on scent.

4. Loewe: best for design-led décor

Loewe's Beetroot candle is earthy, sweet and subtly spicy. Its sculptural ribbed vessel works as décor when unlit. It's the only Loewe candle we currently list, and at £180 you're paying for the design as much as the scent.

How to choose and care for a luxury candle

Pick the scent first, then the size, because size decides how long the candle lasts. Diptyque gives indicative burn times of about 20 hours for a small 70g candle, 50 hours for the classic 190g, 90 hours for 600g and 120 hours for 1.5kg.

  • Choose by mood. Warm and spiced (Diptyque Ambre, Trudon Abd El Kader), floral (Diptyque Roses, Trudon Vesta), woody and smoky (Le Labo Santal 26), or earthy and unusual (Loewe Beetroot).
  • Choose by room. A larger candle suits a living room or open-plan space, and a smaller one suits a bedroom or bathroom.
  • Choose by occasion. Diptyque Vanille or Ambre make easy gifts under £100, and a large Baies or Trudon statement candle is a gift for a special moment.

Candle care tips

These tips follow Diptyque's own guidance and suit most luxury candles. Check the maker's advice for each one.

  1. On the first burn, let the whole surface of the wax turn liquid, which takes about 4 hours for most Diptyque sizes.
  2. After that, burn for no more than 4 hours at a time.
  3. Re-centre the wick once the candle is out and the wax has cooled.
  4. Keep it on a flat, heat-resistant surface.
  5. Never leave a burning candle unattended, and don't move it while it's hot.
